Kickstand Productions Presents!
Kate Renegade, Boo Baby, GIRL K
Kate Renegade (formerly Nest) plays heavy pop / rock & roll out of Chicago.
The sometimes soft, sometimes fierce vocals of frontwoman Stephanie Maieritsch impart an unapologetic intimacy reminiscent of Chrissie Hyde or early-era Liz Phair. Working tightly with bandmates Noah, Eric, & Tommy, they create finely-crafted pieces that combine assured pop instincts with a true rock grit. Or, as the Chicago Tribune put it: “deep lyrics and tightly-constructed instrumentation packed into a few minutes.”
The band met in early 2015, and quickly released a DIY EP before heading into Chicago’s Kingsize Studios to record their first LP, Mother’s Knife, which they released on beautiful blue vinyl in November 2016. After a Midwest tour the following spring, the band got down to work on their second full-length. They are currently recording the album with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio.
The recording features everything Nest does best:
Guitarist Tommy Owley brings jangly arpeggios and a unique picking style. Noah Vandercook’s aggressive drumming demands your attention and drives every song. And Eric Unger carries insistent bass lines but keeps a melancholic edge.
Singer-guitarist Stephanie Maieritsch, who writes most of nest’s songs, interprets her own diverse melodies with a powerful voice that lends a singular timbre to her poetic, heartfelt lyrics.
The band members met in early 2015 while working as concert producers, recording engineers, and equipment experts in Lincoln Square and Logan Square. Grounded in Chicago’s rich indie rock past, they’re intently focused on the city’s musical present — and future.
